It has a tube-like structure with a white reddish color from its root towards middle part of the stem and a green color from middle of stem to its tip.
Scallions grow well in drained fertile soils and full sunlight. They are great in food recipe and salads.
Scallions contain vitamin C for healthy strong bones. They help in preventing flu or cold due to their antibacterial properties.
Green onions have vitamin A and C that help strengthen body immunity. In addition, green onions contain fiber which enhances food digestion, furthermore improve blood circulation and help regulate blood sugar levels.
As I delve into the steps, keep in mind we are not using seeds.
Sourcing Direct From The Market:
After you have prepared your garden or land, visit a market near you and buy fresh bunches of scallions from vendors and ensure they haven't lasted more than 5 days. This will guarantee faster root development once they are planted.
Planting Procedure:
First, dig holes about 60cm apart, each hole to be 15cm deep and 7cm wide.
Second, separate the green bunches ensuring the seedling you get have enough roots for easy penetration in the soil.
Add one palm full, of organic manure, it should either be composite, cow, goat, rabbit or chicken manure, in the hole then begin planting.
NOTE: Well rotted organic manure is the best fertilizer to use and I would recommend it as it brings out plenty, big sized and tall scallions. As you will see below, i have mentioned artificial fertilizer and spray as an option for those who may prefer using it.
Using a water can or hose pipe, water each hole and do this for three consecutive days.
Weeding
After one month, weed the onions with a jembe/hoe and add composite manure to the roots then mulch.
At this stage, scallions will start growing bigger leaf size, more sunlight absorption will take place and lead to photosynthesis.
Harvesting:
Scallions take about 3 to 4 months to be ready for harvest so make sure the farm is free of weeds and irrigate in case of no rains.
Conclusion:
Scallions or green onions are not so much affected by pests and diseases like bulb onions.
Organic or composite manure provides nutrients needed by onions up to maturity.
During weeding, add more soil around the holes for more bunches to shoot unlike bulb onions where you remove excess soil for larger bulb development.
Plant seedlings in the evening to avoid plant stress brought by scorching sun.
If it rains immediately after planting then it will be a boost for the seedlings.
